A Tale of Two Meals and One Infographic [Infographic]

By

I am a bit ashamed of myself right now. I am writing this article while eating some American fast food (no joke). And while there is a lot of debate going on this infographic, I know my meal is violating all the rules! But who knows, maybe this info will help me eat healthier next time around!

If you follow diets than you have probably heard about “meat” based diets that reject carbs, such as bread. Basically, when you order that cheeseburger, it’s not the cheese or meat you should toss aside, but instead the bread!

Why? Well it turns out that meat is harder for your body to digest. Meat does get dissolved into tiny fat droplets, but because there is no insulin (sugar) spike in your blood, most of that fat gets converted into fatty acids that are then used for energy. As the authors point out:

Without an insulin spike fatty acids aren’t trapped in your far cells.

Fascinating!

Carbs, on the other hand, produce insulin which in turn signals your body to store fat in your cells. Literally, carbs command your cells to pull fat from the blood stream and store it in your body! In their own words:

Insulin tells your fat cells to pull fat from the bloodstream.

And we all know what that means (you get fatter).

So if you have to choose between eggs and bacon, and a bagel and cream cheese, you’re better off with the bacon! That’s fine by me, that’s what I’d choose anyways.
