Eating out is a huge part of American culture, and this infographic offers a lot of insight. So what’s the main theme?

The restaurant industry made impressive strides in 2011, despite a lackluster post-recession economy. Here’s a look at how the industry makes an impact on the economy.

And look we shall! Each day some 130 million people will be restaurant patrons, resulting in 1.7 billion dollars worth of spending. For all of 2012 this should generate 630 billion dollars in profits and a total impact of 1.5 trillion dollars. In fact, for every dollar spent in a restaurant, it generates 2.05 dollars for the economy.

And while the U.S. economy is only growing at about 1.3 percent, the restaurant industry is pulling away with growth rates of 2.3 percent. By 2020, the restaurant industry expects to add 1.4 million jobs.

Perhaps best of all is the fact that restaurants offer a great way to go from rags to riches. 80 percent of restaurant owners started off as entry level staff. Talk about career and job mobility. Restaurants employ about 10 percent of the workforce, and 50 percent of adults have worked at a restaurant at some point in their life!
