I am a lucky guy and am allergic to very few things. Still, I know a lot of people who have to be very careful because they are allergic to a wide range of things, from dogs to peanuts. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans have allergies, including allergic asthma.
17.9 million adults suffer from hay fever, with an additional 7.1 million children also suffering. And another 8.6 million children have respiratory allergies. On top of all of that, some 12 to 14 million people suffer from allergic asthma!
One thing I have never considered is how hard it must be to travel when you have allergies. Allergies could certainly put a kink in any trip and might even cause major medical problems for an unlucky individual.
In terms of vacation destinations, heading to a beach is the most popular option, with nearly 60 percent of people choosing that their destination. Just under 40 percent of people head to the city, while 23 percent head to amusement parts and 21 percent go out on cultural trips.
Yet all of these trips can increase allergies. Some cities, such as St. Louis and Dallas, are well known for being among the “sneeziest” cities. And there are numerous other things that could cause you to react.
For example, up to 10 percent of the weight of a two year old pillow can be composed of dust mites and their droppings! Gross! And high humidity encourages mold growth.
No worries, however, if you are looking for places to go and stay that keep allergy causing conditions under control, make sure you check out Denver and Washington DC. And consider hotels like the Hyatt that work hard to prevent things like dust mites.
