Sony has taken a lot of hits in recent years. And that’s too bad. Since rising from the ashes of World War II, the company has contributed a great many technological advances. Add in the fact that I own a great Sony smartphone, and

I must admit that I am a fan of the company.

So when did Sony get started? In 1946 Sony was founded by engineer Massaru Ibuka. By 1950 the company launched a recording tape and by 1955 the company was building Japan’s first transistor radio.

In 1960 Sony expanded to the United States with the launch of Sony Corporation of America. By 1968 the company was building color TVs and in 1975 Sony launched the Betamax VCR. For those of you unfamiliar with Betamax, it was an earlier competitor to VHS systems (of course, I bet a lot of people don’t even know what those are!).

And in 1979 the first Walkman was produced. An early predecessor to the iPod, the Walkman allowed people to enjoy music on the go. In 1994 Sony launched its Playstation gaming console, kicking off a decade’s worth of video game dominance.

In 2001 Sony would team up with telecommunications firm Ericsson to build cell phones. And some ten years later they’d build my current smartphone!

Of course, now Sony has launched its waterproof Experia Z. I’ve checked out reviews on this phone and so far people are loving it! So if you’re in the smartphone market, give it a close look. Thanks to Vodafone for bringing up this Infographic.
