I won’t lie, my own ability to use computers is actually quite limited. Still, I’ve always had a fascination with the tech industry and computing technology.

If you find yourself in a similar position, you will probably find this infographic by veracode really interesting! It outlines the history of computer code, which is essentially the “languagecomputers “think” in.

A lot of the languages listed were created by Americans, but Brits and other people also contributed quite a bit. This infographic really shows how computer technology has been a global effort that have evolved over decades.

The oldest language still in use is FORTRAN, which is used by NASA, ATM machines, and credit card companies. Another older language, Pascal, was invented in 1970 and is still used to this day by applications such as Skype.

These languages are not used by a lot of programmers, but the second most popular language was invented all the way back in 1972. Called “C”, this language is used to underpin Unix, and is popular for a variety of applications, including the design and creation of video games. C++ and Objective-C are extensions of C and is also used for a lot of different applications.

In 1987 Larry Wall created a language called “Perl” which is still used by Amazon and IMDb, among others. Google and Yahoo use a code called “Python,” which is named after the famous British comedy troupe, Monty Python.

And the most recent popular language is Javascript, which is used by Gmail and Firefox! Check out the rest of the popular languages in this kick ass infographic!
