The first known taco party was held by Hernan Cortes…. you know right before he went on to kill all the Aztecs

The word taco, however, wouldn’t be invented until the 18th century. Back then it referred to a bit of paper wrapped around gun powder…. Wait a minute, did people eat these tacos, or did they use them for something else?

As immigration from Mexico and the rest of Latin America picked up in the 20th century, immigrants brought their new found foods with them. Carne Asada, which features thin slices of meat, salsa, onions, and a bit of guacamole, came from northern Mexico, from a place called Sonora.

Meanwhile, De Cabeza came from a central Mexican town called Bajio. And De Cabeza actually translates to “cows head”! No word if cow heads are actually used. And in Baja California, fish are a common ingredient in tacos! Not a huge fish fan, so I will have to pass on those!

Anyways, fast forwarding to 1962, Taco Bell was established by Glenn Bell. This chain is now practically ubiquitous across America. Tacos are now a favorite food and even an important part of the American economy! And now every October 4th the United States of America celebrates National Taco Day!
