Analyzing the Tiger Woods Economy [Infographic]

Like the global economy, the “Tiger Woods economy” has had a rough few years. Still, I bet his wallet is still looking quite a bit thicker than mine! Tiger Woods continues to draw huge crowds and millions of eyes to television sets. In fact, just by stepping onto a golf course to compete, TV stations can charge a premium of 20 to 50% to potential advertisers. Mind blowing!

And did you know that Tiger Woods has pulled in over a 100 million dollars in career winnings? That sounds like a huge pile of cash until you compare it to the 500 million plus-plus cash mountain Tiger has amassed through sponsorships! 600 million dollars for playing a game? That’s a heck of a lot of money! But then again, Tiger’s presence at a golf course can bring up to 50,000 out-of-towners to the course, thus generating millions for the local economy!

And you know what? Every golfer has benefited because of Tiger Woods, even if he regularly beats the bulk of his competitors. Why? Prize money has skyrocketed from just under 66 million in 1996 to nearly 280 million in 2010

Of course, these days Tiger is as famous for his off-the-course antics as he is for his on the links dominance. Tiger lost a lot of sponsors, including Accenture and Gillette, after his affair broke and his game play suffered for years. Still, the last I checked ESPN it seems like Tiger might be rounding the bend and seeing green fairways ahead!
