It’s pathetic how big of a deal texting while driving has become, but sadly our texting problem cost numerous Americans their lives each year. In fact, mobile phones were involved 1.3 million car accidents, good for 23 percent of all collisions.
At the very least, texting, checking a message, or any other activity on your phone will eat up at least five seconds of your time. And if you’re traveling at 55 miles per hour, that means you’ll cross an entire football field without so much as glancing at the road. A child or animal could step in front of you. A car could pull out of a drive way, or numerous other things could happen.
The problem is especially bad among teenagers. 34 percent of teens admit to texting while driving, while 52% admit to talking on cell phones while driving. Sadly, adults are not doing much better with 27 percent of them admitting that they have sent or received a text while driving.
The worst fact of all, however, might be the fact that 77 percent of young adults think they can safely text while driving. Yet, why risk anything over a silly text message? It takes only a second for a car accident to occur and it can change your life forever!
