Flushed Away: America’s Huge Water Footprint [Infographic]

By

Water is absolutely vital for life, and the amount potable (drinkable) water on Earth is limited. Even so, Americans waste huge amounts of water each day.

Think of it this way, America is home to about 315 million people and consumes some 1.053 billion gallons of water per day. According to the World Bank China, on the other hand, is home to about 1.207 billion people, yet this infographic points out that as a whole the country consumes about 1.2 billion gallons of water. India is home to over a billion people too (World Bank), yet consumes only 1.182 billion gallons of water per day.

It’s clear to see that the American lifestyle creates a huge water footprint. So what’s a water footprint anyways?

It “is the total amount of water used measured in cubic meters.”

A family of four will use about 400 gallons of water per day, with 27 percent of it being literally flushed down the toilet.

There are a lot of things you can do, however, to save water, and also cut down on your water bill. For one, you can fix any leaky faucets. Two, you can also turn off the facet when brushing your teeth. Further you can upgrade to water efficient toilets.

This should help you save money. For example, following all of the tips outlined in this insightful infographic would save someone in Seattle about 400 bucks per year. Not bad! Thanks to Credit Loan for an interesting infographic.
