Living in Poverty in The Bronx [Infographic]

By

I’ve never been to the Big Apple. I used to live on the East Coast for a few years, so there’s really no excuse, I was just too lazy to go and personally never suffered from any NYC craze.

Anyways, like most Americans I know a bit about NYC and I always heard that Bronx was one of the rougher neighborhoods. Well, it turns out that many parts of the Bronx are a lot poorer than I thought!

See, I always figured that most of the borough was working class. As this neighborhood-by-neighborhood map shows, however, that in many places between 41.8 percent and 81.7 percent of people are living below the Federal poverty line! The Western half seems especially poor.

Meanwhile, NYC as a whole suffers from a poverty rate of “only” 20.9 percent. That’s still high, but looks a lot better than many areas of the Bronx. And I imagine that in this tough economy, things will only get worse.
