Playing Cupid: Valentine’s Day in the UK [Infographic]

By

Well this is a lovely infographic, and quite literally too! Valentine’s Day is one of the biggest non-religious holidays in the world and is celebrated by millions of people! This great infographic focuses on Valentine’s Day in the United Kingdom, but the insights are useful for people across the globe.

And a survey even tries to put an end to the age old debate of who is the better gift giver. Turns out men spend 26 pounds on their sweeties while women only spend 21 pounds. Of course, with gift giving it’s not about quantity but instead quality.

Collectively, this spending is worth nearly 670 million pounds per year, a huge jolt for any economy! And what are they spending all of this money on? Lingerie is the most popular gift, accounting for 38% of gifts. Chocolate comes in at second place with 36% while flowers account for another 31%.

If you are looking for some romance, you might fit in better in Cambridge and London, where spending tops 40 pounds! On the other hand, if you’re not looking to break the bank, Glasgow and Carlisle might be the place for you. Spending there doesn’t even top 5 pounds per person! Talk about a cheap date.

It’s not all romantic news however, as only about half of Britons plan to purchase their loved one a gift.

39% of coupled-up Britons won’t celebrate Valentine’s Day at all this year.

Even worse 8% of Britons report breaking up with someone on the special day. Talk about an arrow through the heart!

And if you’re single you might consider a night out with some friends. 26% of Brits spend their Valentine’s day with a friend. Or maybe you’ll join the 17% of people who attend a singles event, looking for some love.
