The Rising Epidemic of Mobile Phone Theft [Infographic]

Often, when I am walking through the main square in a major city, I come across people trying to hawk “used” phones. It always makes me wonder how many of these “used” phones are in fact stolen phones. Well, as the data in this infographic points out, mobile phone left is a major issue for British citizens.

Mobile phone ownership in the United Kingdom has now reached just over 80 percent of people. In fact, 98 percent of people aged 18 to 44 own a mobile phone. It’s no wonder cell phones are becoming popular targets for theft.

Sadly, 3.6 percent of people with a cell phone have reported having it stolen in the last year. And 2 percent of these thefts occur at the workplace, so it seems like you aren’t safe no matter where you are at! Further, the most vulnerable group is women aged 18 to 24. And 25 percent of all mobile phone lefts go unreported to the network!

So who are the perps snatching phones? Well, it turns out that 68 percent of them are males while 27 percent are females. The rest are male-female couples. Talk about an odd way to spend a date! (Hey honey, do you want to go rob some people?).

And 58 percent of these offenders are aged 16 to 24. 75 percent of these offenders are also strangers to victims, but that leaves 25 percent who steal from people they know!
