The State of World Wide Water [Infographic]

Water, it’s one of the most precious commodities on Earth. Whereas a healthy person can easily survive a week or more without food (and often up to a month), a person can die in less than 72 hours if deprived of water.

Water is extremely abundant across the world, however only 3/10ths of a percent of water is available for human use! The rest is either salt water, or tied up in something like icebergs and glaciers.

As you might guess on your own, people in rich countries have much better access to water than people in poor countries, creating numerous health problems. In fact, some 783 million people do not have regular access to safe drinking water, most of them found in underdeveloped countries, especially in Africa. Sadly, this leads to the death of some 700,000 African children per year.

One thing you can do to help is to reduce water waste. Fixing leaky faucets and other leaks around the house can greatly reduce waste. In fact, leaks count as the largest public waste of water!

You can also turn off the faucet while you brush your teeth or shave. Also, doing simple things, like selecting the right laundry load size, can save a ton of water. And you can also look for more efficient appliances!
