The Rise of Mickey Mouse [Infographic]

Mickey Mouse. One of the greatest icons in American culture and in many ways the embodiment of American ideals. Always the hero, forever compassionate, and yet never arrogant. So check out this great time line that will help you understand more about animation, movies, and cartoons.

Mikey Mouse came from humble beginnings, being invented by cartoonist Ub Iwerks in 1928. That little tidbit of information caught me off guard, I always figured Walt Disney created him. While Walt might not have created him, his first movie, the silent “Plane Crazy” launched in 1928 did feature Mickey. Mickey got his own voice a few months later with the debut of Steamboat Willie, and his popularity exploded!

By 1930 Disney was signing songs and the feature of numerous books and was coming to the real world in the form of stuff animals and other merchandise. And by 1932 Mickey Mouse’s fan club had over a million members. Lindsay Lohan and later Disney stars are probably jealous of those numbers!

In 1935 Walt Disney decided to brighten things up and launched the first fully colored Disney cartoon with “The Band Concert.” And by 1937 Mickey Mouse started to appear in costume at Disney events, drawing the adoration of fans and audiences.

Mickey would appear in his first full length movie in 1940 but “Simple Things,” released in 1953 would be the last movie he would appear in until 1983. While Mickey may have been banished from the big screen for a few years, he did make a big appearance in the 1970 Macy’s Thanksgiving parade and stood a proud three stories tall!

Mickey has been up to even more stuff as of late, but instead of me babbling on about it, you should check out this cute little infographic from Going2Travel.com!
